In the movie All My Friends Hate Me, Pete plans to celebrate his birthday with a weekend getaway to a country estate with his college PALS. He had not seen them for years and this would be the first time his girlfriend had met them. However, a stranger, Harry, joined the party. Peter said he seemed to have seen him from somewhere, but he didn’t know who.
As the story goes on, Peter becomes increasingly paranoid, worried that his friends don’t like him, and Harry is leading the attack on Peter’s character. Perfect for our age of social anxiety, Andrew Gaynord’s dark comedy tells a hilariously clever story of one man’s paranoia, filled with doubt. Screenwriter Tom Stoughton weaves the complex nature of Pitt’s insecurity into the mix with nuance and humor in a can ‘t-miss dark comedy that not only portrays one embarrassing moment after another, but also makes you question our habitually social lives.
“All My Friends Hate Me” is a very controlled and well-curated movie. Pete’s social anxiety, and his constant fear that there’s something weird going on, drives the story forward. With a brilliant script, the unease pervades the film from the start. No matter what he does or how hard he tries to fit in, Pitt never feels completely comfortable, and it’s this feeling that amplifies the real anxiety about social etiquette and convention that creates unsettling conflict and tension throughout the film. As the story goes on, Pete clearly feels left out, as if everyone is laughing at him, against him, or doesn’t like him the way he is.
Do Pete’s friends hate him? Is Pete a different man now, so much so that he no longer finds their jokes funny, or is Pitt too smug?
